When you’re exploring your data to find an interesting data story to tell to your audience and you’re going through the eight story types to determine whether they can shed any light on the situation, you will come across data story type #2 - hierarchy drill down. At this point, look at your dimensions, or categories, and determine which ones have a hierarchical relationship. Common fields like company / department / team or product category / product family / SKU can fall into this type of arrangement.

Once you identify any hierarchies in your data, visualize the most important measures (like sales or profit or conversion rate) at different levels of the hierarchy. Do you see dramatically different performance or results at different levels of the hierarchy, or between different members of the same hierarchical level?

This is the seed of a fascinating drill-down story.
